The level of hunger and food insecurity is constantly increasing around the world. About 10 percent of the world's population, or 81.10 million people, go to bed hungry every night, an increase of 1.6 billion last year compared to 2020.

According to a recent UN Global Humanitarian Report released in 2021, the effects of the Corona, extreme weather, and obstacles to delivering aid to those in need, combined with hunger, food insecurity, and famine, are the main causes.

The way it is defined:

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), "hunger is an uncomfortable or painful physical sensation, caused by an inadequacy of food energy."

The United Nations has compiled data on food availability, food consumption and malnutrition in various countries to measure global hunger. Food insecurity is when a person is deprived of normal growth and development and adequate safe and nutritious food for an active and healthy life due to lack of money or unavailability of food, the FAO says.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has mentioned in its report some of the countries that are currently most in need of food.

Afghanistan:

Afghanistan has one of the highest levels of food insecurity in the world. In this country of 40 million people, 93 percent or more than 30.7 million people are living without food. According to the World Food Program (WFP), a record 20.3 million Afghans are facing severe hunger. And there are about 9 million near famine. In addition, the country's 1 million children under the age of five are at risk of dying from malnutrition.

Yemen:

Yemen is one of the poorest countries in the world. According to the latest WFP figures, almost half of the country's 30 million people (1 crore 4.3 million) do not have enough food at home. Nearly half (47.5%) of children under the age of 5 in Yemen suffer from chronic malnutrition. At least 4 million people have been displaced and thousands have been killed in the country's seven-year war.

Syria:

After more than 10 years of conflict, Syrians face widespread poverty and food insecurity. 1 crore 24 lakh Syrians out of 2 crore do not know where their next meal will come from. About 1 out of every 3 children under the age of 5 in the country (27.9 percent) is living with chronic malnutrition.

South Sudan, Congo and Somalia:

South Sudan suffers from the highest levels of food insecurity and malnutrition. More than half of the country's population suffers from malnutrition. And the most food insecure people in the world live in the Democratic Republic of Congo, a West African country. The number of hungry people has risen alarmingly in the East African country of Somalia.
